Rep. Mike Turner says Biden admin was ‘sleepwalking’ on Russian nuclear threat before his surprise disclosure

Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said President Biden’s administration was “sleepwalking” about the Russian nuclear threat before revealing it last week.

Mr. Turner on Wednesday notified all members of Congress of Russia’s intent to send nuclear weapons into space and called on Mr. Biden to declassify information about the threat. He worried that the White House was “sleepwalking into an international crisis.”

“What I’m asking the administration to do is declassify this,” Turner told NBC News on Saturday. “And my concern is that this is like a Chinese spy balloon, and the administration probably “This suggests that he may be hiding some kind of inaction.” .

“Everyone who saw this used the same words I did: this is a very serious threat,” Turner added. “We met, [national security adviser] Jake Sullivan and he started making plans to hopefully start working on this problem. ”

Sullivan said he had already pre-scheduled a meeting with Turner and other members of the Congressional Gang of Eight, and had expressed surprise at Turner’s decision to sound the alarm last week.

“It was on the books, so I’m a little surprised that Congressman Turner came out publicly today ahead of the books meeting,” Sullivan said at a White House press briefing.
