UK Labour Party Leader Calls for Israel-Hamas Ceasefire ‘Now’

British Labor Party leader Sir Keir Starmer on Sunday called for a ceasefire “now” between Israel and Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip.

Mr Starmer urged his party to reject an earlier motion calling for an immediate ceasefire, but 56 of his own MPs defected and several members of the shadow government resigned in protest. It is unclear whether the Labor leader will issue similar marching orders to MPs this week.

Mr Starmer is trying to distance Labor from its history of anti-Semitism scandals that plagued his predecessor Jeremy Corbyn in a bid to convince Britain’s centre-right voters that his left-wing party is worthy of governing.

Labor on Monday withdrew its support for candidate Azhar Ali in this month’s Rochdale by-election over leaked comments claiming that Israel had deliberately given the “green light” to kill Islamist Hamas terrorists. Mr Starmer’s zero-tolerance of anti-Semitism is likely to win centrist support in the general election, but risks further alienating the Muslim community, one of the party’s most reliable voters.
