The health official told attendees, including World Economic Forum President Klaus Schwab: “Today, I want to remind you that in the aftermath of COVID-19, millions of people have died and the social, economic and political I stand before you in a situation where the shock is still felt.”
He added: “Despite some progress, including improved surveillance, pandemic funds and building vaccine production capacity, the world is not ready for a pandemic.”
Former Ethiopian Health Minister Ghebreyesus went on to warn that “as attention turns to the many other crises facing the world, the painful lessons we have learned are in danger of being forgotten.”
The health official went on to say that if the world does not learn lessons from the coronavirus pandemic, “we will pay a high price next time, and there will be another.”

“History teaches us that it’s not a matter of if the next pandemic will occur, but when,” he added. “It could be caused by the influenza virus, the coronavirus, or a new pathogen that we don’t know about yet – what we call Disease X.
