Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed optimism about Shohei Ohtani’s recovery schedule after the team’s mega-contract superstar underwent elbow surgery in September.
Roberts has not yet committed to Ohtani playing in any Cactus League games in spring training.

“He’s a lot more advanced than any of us expected (probably not named Shohei),” Roberts said Saturday. “He’s been ahead of schedule because he’s been working really hard.
“As far as when he’s going to play in a Cactus League game, I don’t know the answer to what that means, but he just keeps getting better and better every day and feels really good.” It seems like it is.”

Ohtani was seen hitting back from his pitching coach in the batter’s box. He may be able to take live batting practice this week in preparation for the regular season.
The two-time American League MVP played the first few years of his MLB career with the Los Angeles Angels before signing a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers in September.
He will not pitch this year, but is expected to be ready to play when the Dodgers open the regular season against the San Diego Padres on March 20 in Seoul, South Korea.
