Four young men from Venezuela, believed to be in the United States illegally, are accused of violently assaulting a man on a Chicago train over the weekend.
On Sunday around 4:45 p.m., an unidentified 49-year-old man was accosted by multiple suspects who were riding on a Pink Line train.according to news release Chicago police said the suspects robbed and strangled the victim near the train station on S. Kostner Street, about 11 miles west of downtown.
Police did not immediately provide details of the victim’s injuries, but later report The man was shown to have lost consciousness during or shortly after the assault. Since then, he has begun to recover.
About 45 minutes after the attack, officers arrested four youths in connection with the incident: Fernando Royo-Rodriguez, 22, Wilker Gutierrez Sierra, 21, and Carlos Carreno-Carreno, 20. Chicago police have not confirmed the man’s legal status. Each is charged with two felonies: robbery and aggravated assault by strangulation.
Further details about the defendant were revealed during a hearing at Leighton Crown Court on Monday. Three of the four have already been arrested and charged with misdemeanors related to the alleged retail theft, according to WGN.
The newspaper also reported that three out of four people could be deported if convicted in connection with the train crash. It is unclear which of the three girlfriends will be deported or whether the three girlfriends allegedly involved in the theft are the same person.
Public defenders were present for at least three of the suspects during Monday’s hearing.
