IL high-rise building fire leaves 7 hospitalized, including baby

A fire at a Chicago high-rise building Wednesday afternoon left seven people hospitalized, including an infant in critical condition, fire officials said.

Chicago Fire Department District 1 Chief Jim McDonough said at a news conference that seven people, including an infant, were rushed to area hospitals.

The other four children were taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in good and fair condition, fire officials said.

Officials said one person jumped from a fourth-floor window and was hospitalized in good condition. A seventh person was taken to Trinity Hospital in good condition.

Firefighters also performed ladder rescues outside the building while people were hanging from windows.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at the 1920s high-rise building in the South Shore neighborhood just before 4 p.m. McDonough said the fire started in the kitchen of a unit on the second floor of the 14-story building.

McDonough said there was thick smoke from the second floor to the upper floors.
