Forty-five Maine state legislators are calling Cabela’s an AR-15 and Democrats calling it an “assault rifle,” noting that the gunman in Lewiston on Oct. 25, 2023, bought a handgun from the retail giant. Pressure to stop selling other firearms.
Lawmakers have not explained what the connection is between handgun purchases and AR-15 purchases, but they are calling on Cabela’s to reduce its sales of AR-15s anyway.
WGME I got it. The push is being led by state Rep. Lori Gramlich, a Democrat, who said she and 44 other lawmakers sent a letter to Cabela that read in part:
The horrific loss of life from a legally purchased weapon in Lewiston on October 25, 2023 is a wake-up call for all of us in Maine that mass gun deaths can happen here, too. We all must do our part to prevent something like this from happening again. Doing nothing is never acceptable. As one of the most successful outdoor enthusiast companies in the United States, making this decision will help Maine recover.
You will be setting an example for other outdoor retailers in Maine to join in this tangible, common sense change. Just like when Walmart banned the sale of these weapons in all of its stores nationwide. LL Bean and Dick’s Sporting Goods also demonstrated leadership by choosing not to sell military-style semi-automatic rifles.
The 45 members of Congress are also pressuring the Kittery Trading Post, which has been in business since the late 1930s, to stop selling “assault rifles.”
This isn’t the first time Maine lawmakers have turned to gun dealers for inventory control.
Thursday, July 12, 2018 – Months after the Parkland, Florida High School attack – NH1 I got it. Those three “[Democrat] Lawmakers sent a letter to Kittery Trading Post asking the store to restrict gun sales and stop selling assault-style rifles, which the lawmakers say is illegal. ”
“To us, your store represents a good business that is involved in the community and the areas in which it operates,” the councilors said, referring to Parkland.
Lawmakers hinted that the boycott would continue if the Kittery Trading Post did not surrender.
