A female University of Georgia student was found dead in a “wooded area” Thursday after going for a run on campus in Athens, according to university police.
Officials said in a statement that they received a call shortly after noon Thursday “from a person concerned about the safety of a friend who had gone for a run early in the morning at the intramurals and had not returned on time.”
Around 12:30 p.m., authorities found the student in a “wooded area behind Herrick Lake.” Police said the student had “visible injuries” and was pronounced dead on arrival.
“We have been fully briefed on this terrible situation,” UGA said in a news release Thursday afternoon. “We are receiving support to investigate this crime.” “We want to assure you that the safety and well-being of our campus community is our utmost concern.”
Respondents broadcast audio of Colorado dormitory shooting, saying they don’t know if the gunman is still on the run
UGA canceled classes on its Athens campus for the remainder of Thursday evening and all day Friday. The school also noted the death of another student who died by suicide at Brambly Hall on Wednesday night.
The university said: “The past 24 hours have been a traumatic time for our university. The student body is saddened by the sudden death of a student at Brumby Hall last night.” “And as we continue to mourn that tragic loss of life, today’s shocking news will uniquely test the resolve of our campus community, especially our students.”
Herrick Lake is located between UGA’s various practice fields and Oconee Forest Park. There is a pedestrian path on the border of the lake, and there is also a recreational beach. Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area while they investigate.
