GOP chooses former NYPD detective to run for Gillibrand’s NY Senate seat at contentious party convention

Republicans selected former NYPD detective Mike Supply-Corn as their candidate in November in a major effort to oust Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

Supply Cohn won the party’s endorsement in a controversial convention on Thursday, defeating entrepreneur Josh Eisen and Newsmax personality Carla Castronuova.

“We need to remain strong and united,” Supplykone told reporters after the vote. “The problem is on our side, and it’s not just a Republican or conservative problem. These are American and New Yorker problems, and we need those people to stand up and make their voices heard. .”

Supply Corne received 84% of the convention vote, while Eisen and Castronuova each received approximately 8%.

If he wins Thursday’s vote, Saprakorn will appear on the party’s primary ballot in June. Mr. Eisen and Mr. Castronuova said they would be on the ballot as well and let voters decide in June.

Eisen blasted the convention vote, calling it a rigged process by Republican heavyweights.

Mr. Castronuova struck a more conciliatory tone.

“I think it’s good for the party to be unified, but at the same time, when we have primaries, we hope that the candidates will truly demonstrate Republican values to each other,” Castronuova said.

Supplykone dismissed the challenger’s decision to hold a primary as a “poor choice.”

“I don’t think it all reflects Republican values,” Eisen told reporters. “The party is not united. I know that firsthand. Young Republicans in the state, the backbone of the elections we won, are outraged by Mr. Saprakorn’s nomination. They believe he is They don’t like him. They don’t want him.

“You know, after spending the significant amount of money needed to defeat Gillibrand, those numbers could be the same,” he continued. “If you’re going to waste the primary, that’s the American way and I’m fine with that, but I think that’s stupid.”

The delegates of the convention are buzzing Rumors spread that Supply Cohn’s private security company was donating to the Democratic Party. Elections Commission records show Squad Security provided $1,000 in tips for Attorney General Letitia James’ 2022 campaign.

Mr. Saprakorn dismissed the criticism, saying it was the price of doing business in the Empire State.

“I’m a businessman from New York City, Long Island, New York, and anyone who does business in this country, this city, gives on both sides of the aisle. We have never signed a contract, but we have made donations,” Saprakorn told reporters.

He also said he has donated nearly $500,000 to Republicans over the years.

Eisen himself has donated to Democrats, including Jamaal Bowman, a member of the liberal Squad who successfully challenged U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel in the 2020 primary.

The winner of the primary will face Gillibrand in the general election. Gillibrand first held the seat in 2009, when she was chosen to fill a Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama when she appointed then-Senator. Hillary Clinton becomes Secretary of State.
