On Thursday, a robotic spacecraft called Odysseus became the first American spacecraft to land on the moon since 1972. This is the first achievement for a commercial vehicle in any country.

The 14-foot-tall lander was built by Intuitive Machines, a private space company based in Houston, Texas. The company worked in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The spacecraft departed from Earth on February 15 with the help of a SpaceX rocket.th. It was pulled into lunar orbit on Wednesday.

Before Odysseus touched down in a flat area near the Malapart A crater, 195 miles north of the moon’s south pole, the mission encountered an unexpected problem with its navigation system. During the autonomous landing, a company spokesperson announced that the spacecraft’s “AA laser instrument”, which was supposed to provide data on altitude and speed, was not working.

This dilemma caused the spacecraft to make an extra orbit around the moon before landing.

It has been confirmed that Odysseus is on the moon and operational, but its status has not yet been announced.
