Democrats weigh Trump GOP primary victory in South Carolina: ‘He’s in a weak position’

Following his victory in South Carolina’s Republican primary, several Democrats took to social media Saturday night to mock former President Donald Trump, including his last major Republican rival and campaign manager. Some encouraged them to stay.

A primary election for the former president and the 2024 Republican front-runner was called shortly after polls closed Saturday night. President Trump celebrated in November by saying he was looking forward to telling President Biden, “Joe, you’re fired.”

Trump said in a statement following the news of his victory over former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. Biden claimed “As Americans grapple with the damage Donald Trump left behind, we are reminded every day of the threat he poses to our future.”

Biden specifically criticized Trump on the issue of abortion, saying the former president was “taking away the fundamental constitutional rights that women have had in this country for 50 years.”

“We are still rebuilding our economy after President Trump lost millions of good-paying jobs and sold out working families to give benefits to himself and his wealthy friends,” Biden said. ” he added. “And President Trump is once again vowing to use his presidency for his own revenge and retribution in the wake of January 6’s stain on our collective consciousness.”

Reacting to the news of Trump’s victory, Victor See, the youngest delegate elected from Joe Biden in 2020, told I would be happy if the media would also point this out.” And in exit polls, almost 60% of Nikki Haley voters said they would vote against Trump today. ”

“Trump is weak and will lose,” Shi added.

In a subsequent post, Ishi said that Trump “didn’t even reach 60% of the vote today” and claimed that Trump was in a “weak position.”

“The Republican Party is in disarray. The Democratic Party is united behind President Biden,” Shi said.

Democratic political strategist Adam Parkhomenko also weighed in after Trump’s victory, writing in a post on X that “Trump event in South Carolina is not going well.”

Parkkhomenko’s post included footage of President Trump welcoming South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham on stage to give a victory speech. The video showed Graham walking to the microphone as a crowd of Trump supporters booed the senator.

Josh Marshall, founder and editor-in-chief of Talking Points Memo, a liberal political news and opinion website, wrote an article titled “Let’s face it: This is a weak gesture for Trump in South Carolina.”

In the article: Marshall wrote“I’m not going to speculate on what this means for the general election, but this is pretty entrenched opposition for a candidate who has always run as the de facto incumbent.”

President Trump says Haley is “not really thinking” after South Carolina victory and is focused on defeating Biden

“Even if you put aside de facto incumbents, no matter how technical you want to get, it’s a pretty heavy burden for a candidate to be the presumptive nominee. 40% of Republican primary voters They’re still saying they don’t want Trump, even though they know for sure they’re going to get him,” he added.

Some are hopeful that Haley will remain in the race against Trump.

During an appearance on CNN, Congressman James Clyburn (DSC) said he believes Haley should remain in the race against Trump.

“I think Nikki Haley should stay in the race,” Clyburn told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

Clyburn’s comments come as California Governor Gavin Newsom told MSNBC on Saturday in an interview scheduled to air Sunday that Haley was one of the Democrats’ “better surrogates” in making the case against Trump. The announcement was made after he said he believed in it.

“I don’t understand why Democrats would want to remove her from the race.” Newsom told the outlet. “She’s one of our better surrogates, which means she reliably and effectively defines the opposition to Trump.”

“She makes points that I admire every day,” he added.
