Jimenez initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. He was found sane by Superior Court Judge Timothy J. Hollenhorst in December.

In a jailhouse interview with the Riverside Press-Enterprise, Jimenez said he had recently been diagnosed with schizophrenia, but stopped taking his medication because he ran out of it shortly before the shooting.

Jimenez told the newspaper that the only way to protect himself from his victims was to shoot them.
