In 2017, then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo (Democrat) signed The sanctuary policy became law, prohibiting state agencies from cooperating with ICE agents investigating the whereabouts of illegal aliens who have committed crimes in hopes of deporting them.
As a result, New York City law enforcement, like law enforcement in other New York towns and cities, will release illegal aliens arrested on local charges, even under the most violent circumstances. There must be.
Mr. Adams called for the Sanctuary Act to be amended to allow the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to turn criminal illegal aliens over to ICE agents after the illegal alien accused of killing Laken Riley on the University of Georgia campus. Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, first arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border near El Paso, Texas, in September 2022. He was then paroled and released into the interior of the United States, resettling in New York City.
In August 2023, Ybarra was arrested and charged with injury to a child under 17 and motor vehicle traffic violation. The sanctuary law ensured that Antonio Ybarra would be released before ICE agents could request his custody.
Earlier this month, Ybarra was arrested and charged with kidnapping Riley while she was jogging on the morning of February 22nd and killing her on the University of Georgia campus. Police allege Ybarra left Riley’s body in a wooded area near Herrick Lake.
Ybarra remains in the Clark County Jail without bail.
