A group of comedians called Danger Cats canceled at least eight shows after the comedy venue they were scheduled to host received a series of threats ranging from arson to physical violence.
“What started as a joke has now moved into new territory,” wrote comedian Brett Forte. X. “We have received death threats, and so have the staff at the venues where we are scheduled to perform. Right now, the three of us are weathering the storm, but when it comes to our friends in the industry… It’s not worth risking their lives’ livelihood,” Forte continued.
“We are talented performers and we look forward to showing you that at the appropriate time. Unfortunately, our opposition has resorted to arson, vandalism, and threats of physical harm. The time is not now, as we have decided,” he concluded.
Much of the controversy stems from jokes about Canadian residential schools, where the bodies of Indigenous children are said to be buried near or beneath them.
