During a floor session on Monday, a transgender state senator from Virginia quickly left after Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earl Sears called him “sir.”

Sen. Danica Roem (D-Va.), 39, asked Earl Sears about House Bill 592, related to the “Prescription Drug Price Transparency Emergency Regulations.”

Roem is the first biological male who identifies as a transgender woman to be elected to office in Virginia. Senators were interested in the exact number of votes needed to approve this legislation with emergency provisions.

Earl Sears called Rohm “sir” and answered with his number.

“Yes, sir, that will be 32 years old,” the Republican lieutenant governor responded.

After hearing what the “teacher” said, Rohm became furious and ran out of the building.

Earl Sears did not immediately retract her comments. However, during another break she apologized passionately.

She began by pointing out how many Democrats showed her, as a Republican, no respect during her campaign, realizing how disrespectful her seemingly accidental remarks came across as. hinted at the fact that

“I apologize, I apologize, I apologize,” Winsome Sears told the Virginia Senate. “And I hope everyone understands that no offense was intended and that we can forgive each other.”

“There have been times when I myself have not been afforded the same respect and dignity,” she continued.

“In this institution, as long as I am President of the Senate, and by the grace of God, I will be treated with respect and dignity. And I will treat everyone else with respect and dignity.” said Winsome Sears. “We are all equal before the law. We apologize…”

Roem has not released a statement regarding the incident.

But after hearing about the incident, Montana Democratic Rep. Zooey Zephyr (D-Mont.), who is also transgender, protested.

“If @WinsomeSears didn’t intend to accurately indicate @pwcdanica’s gender, she could have simply used her title, Senator Roem,” Zephyr wrote on Twitter on Monday. I mentioned it in my post.

“The only reason you would intentionally misgender a sitting member of Congress is because you want to show the world your brutality,” Zephyr argued.
