Two Massachusetts police officers were hospitalized with “severe bleeding” after being attacked by a woman with a porcelain statue.

According to the Marshfield Police Department, on February 19th at approximately 7:45 p.m., officers were called to a Marshfield apartment to check on the welfare of a person.

Gina Martell, 42, who lives in the apartment complex, had a tendency to have “violent encounters” with police, so a mental health clinician also responded with officers.

Authorities said Martel had an “extensive history” with law enforcement and was “known to carry concealed weapons on his clothing or on his person.”

A mental health doctor and two police officers responded to Martell’s apartment, where the 42-year-old immediately became uncooperative, police said.

Police said Martel yelled for a warrant and “exhibited paranoid and paranoid behavior.” After observing her martel, clinicians determined that the woman was a danger to herself and others.

Clinicians filed paperwork at the apartment to take Martel to the hospital for treatment.

Martell’s family was among those who came to check on her safety and gave officers a key to enter the woman’s apartment.

The officers opened the door, announced their presence, and told Martell they needed to speak to him.

Martell was told he needed to go with the officer to speak with a mental health specialist at the hospital.

Martel reportedly became agitated, argumentative and aggressive.

Authorities said the situation further escalated when Martell picked up an 8-inch ceramic statue and proceeded toward officers at the “menacing residence.”

One of the officers pulled out a Taser and ordered Martel to drop the ceramic weapon, but Martell lunged at the officer anyway. Her officers immediately fired a Taser at her.

Police said the deployed Taser had “minimal effect” and Martel smashed the statue over the officer’s head.

The statue caused “deep lacerations and severe bleeding” to the officer’s head.

Police said Martel, who weighs 300 pounds and is 5 feet 9 inches tall, elbowed and kicked officers as they tried to subdue her and handcuff her.

Officers then called Marshfield Fire to the scene and were able to restrain Martel on a stretcher in an ambulance, requiring an officer to ride with him.

Two Marshfield Police Department officers were injured during the call and were transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
