The House approved a bipartisan bill Wednesday night aimed at boosting nuclear energy.
The vote was 365-36, with one additional lawmaker present for the vote.
All of the “no” votes were Democrats, including several members of the Progressive Caucus. Representative Marcy Capture (D-Ohio) voted present.
The purpose of this law is US nuclear energy production By accelerating the environmental review of new reactors and reducing the fees that license applicants for new reactors must pay.
It would also extend a law limiting industry liability for nuclear accidents for 40 years.
The bill also seeks to strengthen nuclear licensing by requiring “efficient, timely, and predictable reviews and procedures” for licensing reactors.
This bipartisan bill was sponsored by Rep. Jeff Duncan (R.C.) and Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.).
“The Nuclear Power Act restores America’s leadership in nuclear energy and technology that is critical to our nation’s economy and national security. I am proud,” Duncan said in a written statement regarding the passage.
