Shohei Ohtani’s seemingly sudden marriage brought back fond memories of when former Yankees great Hideki Matsui surprised Derek Jeter and other teammates with his marriage.

On Thursday, Ohtani announced that he had gotten married this offseason, but his wife’s identity is even more of a mystery than the new Dodger, telling reporters that she is an “ordinary Japanese woman” whom he has known for about three or four years. ”

Just before the start of the 2008 MLB season, Matsui also revealed that he had recently married an unknown woman.

Matsui, who played for the Bombers from 2003 to 2009, told reporters this meant he won his bet with Jeter.

“I’m taking a gamble,” Matsui said. “If he doesn’t get married within a year, I win the bet. It was basically a bet that whoever gets married first wins. Jeter said he didn’t have a girlfriend, so he had one.” He said he was handicapped for the year.”

Jeter was a famous bachelor during his playing days, having previously dated an endless number of famous women. He married former Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Hannah Davis in 2016.Two years after retiring from baseball.

Jeter apparently felt like he had been cheated on the bet.

“It’s not funny, it’s sad, it’s really sad,” Jeter told reporters at the time. “If he wanted money, all he had to do was ask. He didn’t really need to do that.”

He explained that he had made a bet with Bobby Abreu and then Matsui bit into it.

Jeter knew Matsui had a girlfriend, but he didn’t know the timing of marriage was imminent.

“I didn’t know he was getting married this spring,” Jeter protested.

Matsui did not reveal his bride’s name to reporters, only saying that she was a 25-year-old civilian who previously held a highly reputable position in a highly reputable company.

Jeter, with a twinkle in his eye, threatened to smear Matsui’s wife’s name if he did not refund the stake.
