The vandalism was spotted by the Post as a crowd of anti-Israel demonstrators passed near the tourist attraction.
Some of the group, including men wearing traditional Orthodox Jewish clothing, climbed atop the statue and waved Palestinian flags.
The protesters eventually made their way to City Hall, where multiple people were arrested.
New York City police said eight people were issued citations for disorderly conduct and another person was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing public administration.
The wave of people who flooded the streets of Lower Manhattan were part of the “Gaza Urgent Action” rally, which was held in response to the deaths of more than 100 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip early Thursday morning.
Gaza residents who witnessed the tragedy said they saw Israeli forces firing on crowds of hungry Palestinians as they tried to pull boxes of flour and canned goods from aid trucks.
But Israel blamed the deaths on an uncontrolled stampede and said its troops only fired “a few warning shots” when the crowd got out of hand.
