Top House Republican reverses retirement plans after urging from Trump

A top House Republican lawmaker is changing his mind about retiring after receiving encouragement from former President Trump.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.) said Thursday he is reversing his decision not to run for a fourth term.

“My strong desire was to leave Congress at the end of this year, but since my announcement I have received countless calls from my constituents, my colleagues, and President Trump urging me to reconsider,” Greene told Fox News Digital. Stated.

“I’m going to run for re-election so I can be here on the first day of next year and help President Trump end this border crisis once and for all.”

Her announcement came shortly after Trump urged Greene to reconsider in a post on his Truth Social account. The former president said he would support Greene if she ran.

“Mark Greene had many options because of his political talent and the great job he has done as a member of Congress, but given his great job as chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, I think he is “I hope to run for re-election,” a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. If he does, he has my full and complete support! ” Trump wrote.

In addition to running for re-election, Trump is influencing House and Senate elections across the country through various endorsements and behind-the-scenes maneuvering.

He recently spoke with Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and Rep. Richard Hudson (R-La.), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, the House Republican Party’s campaign arm.

Their sit-in at Mar-a-Lago earlier this month focused primarily on the 2024 election cycle and how to preserve and expand Mr. Johnson’s razor-thin two-seat House majority. I was disappointed.

As chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Greene has played a leading role in the House’s impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

He told Fox News Digital last week that his role was “challenging, rewarding and meaningful.”

Greene said at the time that she was “incredibly proud and grateful to my fellow Republican committee members and the staff of the Homeland Security Committee.”

“I will never forget the hard work and long hours they put in to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable and respond to an unprecedented, self-inflicted border crisis by passing H.R. 2. Let’s go.”
