We Need to End Sanctuaries ‘Certainly’ for ‘Most Serious Criminals’ — We Had a Program that Worked

On Thursday’s broadcast of Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends,” former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said local law enforcement is working with immigration authorities to “definitely commit the most serious crimes that we have.” The Obama administration said: The program “led local law enforcement agencies to work with ICE again, especially against the most serious offenders.”

Mr Johnson said: “In 2014, there was a program called Secure Communities that did exactly this. It was politically and legally controversial. We revamped the program to encourage people to work with ICE again. And about 80% of local communities started working with us again. Only two large cities refused. One of them was in Philadelphia. We had Mayor Nutter (D) work with us. His successor broke the agreement on his first day in office. And I’ll never forget when I talked to the Philadelphia City Council member. Hmm. He said to me, why do we have to deport him? He’s already finished his time here in the United States. It doesn’t matter. He’s a convicted felon. So we should be able to get local law enforcement to work with ICE to ensure that the most serious criminals among us are detained and deported. It’s not a difficult proposition.”
