Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley on Friday declined to speculate on whether former President Trump will abide by the Constitution if re-elected in 2024.
But Haley expressed doubts when asked by “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker if she would do so if Trump took back the Oval Office.
“I don’t know. I mean, you always want to think that someone would, but I don’t know,” Haley said. pre-recorded interview on “Meet the Press,” scheduled to air Sunday.
“When we go in, we talk about revenge…we talk about revenge…what does that mean?” she continued. “I don’t know what that means. And only he can answer it.”
Haley’s comments come as several states move to remove President Trump from their ballots, citing the 14th Amendment’s Insurrection Clause, which prohibits those sworn to an oath of office from rebelling against the government. It was issued in response to the fact that
The argument against the former president, the current front-runner in the Republican primary, is that he incited the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and should therefore be ineligible to run for president.
Most recently, an Illinois judge moved to exclude Trump from the state’s Republican primary.
Judge Tracy Porter in Cook County, Illinois, later put the order on hold after the former president’s legal team appealed. Now, former presidents will be allowed to continue voting until the Illinois Court of Appeals issues a final ruling.
The Supreme Court will also consider whether Trump can be disqualified from appearing on Colorado’s ballots, in a landmark case that could change the presidential election forever. The high court held oral arguments in the case earlier this month.
Haley, who recently suffered defeats in Michigan and her home state of South Carolina despite Trump’s large lead in the race, has vowed to remain in the race at least through Super Tuesday.
