On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher and Newsweek Opinion editor Batia Unger Sargon said 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump would ban abortions after 16 weeks. He said what he reportedly supports is what the Democratic Party once believed in, his position on immigration. That’s what the Democratic Party had in the ’90s. But Maher later said Trump sees all sides on every issue.
“To you and most Democrats, Trump is an extremist. But to his supporters, he’s a liberal, and they like that.” Unger Sargon said.
Maher agreed with the assessment of Trump as an extremist and expressed doubts that he was labeled a liberal.
Unger-Sargon continued: “So, for example, if you look at his position on abortion, 16 weeks. That used to be the Democratic position on abortion.”
Maher replied, “I agree.”
Unger-Sargon continued, “He just accepted $45,000 from the Teamsters union, which donated to the RNC a week after his meeting with President Trump. That was my position.”
Maher replied, “Of course.”
Maher added: “You can hate Trump, but you can’t hate everyone who likes him. There’s half this country, there’s a lot of outrageous people on the left, and I don’t like Trump. “Will I vote?” he added. No, but I understand, I understand.I read it there this week. [are] In more than 1,000 school districts, like the 1,044 currently in school districts, some people won’t tell parents if their child transfers. ”
Former Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) later said, “But you can’t apologize for Trump’s actions. For example, he can say he’s pro-gay, pro-choice, all these things.” But then he nominates a Supreme Court nominee from the Federalist Society, and he’s not going to try to block passage of the gay rights bill in the Senate and twist arms and all that. No. He couldn’t do anything, just pass tax cuts, and then he nominated extreme people to the Supreme Court to keep him from getting a trial. So you can too — he I say it all and I stand on all sides of every issue.”
Maher replied: That’s his genius. When he was running in 2016, I think he was Chris Matthews, the abortion issue came up and he said he was going to have to put doctors in jail. Remember after the shooting? He said, “Mike, why don’t you take away the gun first?” If anyone else said that, it would be anathema to the right wing. ”
