Biden Should Take Executive Action to Strengthen Border

On Friday’s “CBS Morning,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) said he supports President Joe Biden taking executive action to enact stronger border policies.

“There’s a disaster at the border, there’s an effort to get something passed, there’s a lot of politics going on. Republicans want to be more radical than Democrats. In short, tens of thousands of people every week. It’s impossible for people to try to enter the country illegally. But what you can do is create a long-term immigration policy that makes sure that, among other things, children born in this country It’s about being a citizen and having sound and reasonable policies when it comes to immigration, and we don’t have that. We have it now. We need bipartisan cooperation. It will be.”

Co-host Gayle King then asked, “Biden says he’s considering using executive orders to tighten border policy. Do you support that?”

Mr. Sanders responded, “Yes, I will.”

Dr. King followed up with, “Do you support that?” Mr. Sanders again answered in the affirmative.

Co-host Tony Dokoupil asked, “What do we do with the people who are already here?” Donald Trump has said he wants to deport them all. He said that just yesterday. ”

Sanders responded, “You remember that just a few weeks ago, maybe a month ago, Mr. Trump said something very frightening… that our blood is going to be poisoned. …You know, my father came to this country from Poland at the age of 17 with no nickel in his pocket. We’re primarily a nation of immigrants. And humane solutions to actually very difficult problems. We’re going to have to figure out a solution. And even though we’re trying to have healthy immigration policies, do you know why people are fleeing? They’re not able to grow crops because of climate change. Children are being displaced from Central and South America and elsewhere because drug violence in their communities is killing them. So it’s a complex problem. We need a humane response to it.”
