The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that people who have recovered from COVID-19 no longer need to quarantine for five days after their symptoms end.

According to the CDC’s latest recommendations, people with COVID-19 should avoid contact with others and stay home without medication until at least 24 hours after their symptoms improve and they no longer have a fever.
“Today’s announcement reflects the progress we are making to protect against severe illness caused by COVID-19,” CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen said in a statement. “But we still need to use the common-sense solutions we know work to protect ourselves and others from serious illness from respiratory viruses. This includes: That includes vaccinations, treatment, and staying home when you’re sick.”
It also said people should wear a properly fitting mask, avoid close contact with others, get tested and practice good hygiene for five days after they feel well and no longer have a fever. .
It was also stated that the guidelines are intended to be used in community settings, rather than medical settings such as nursing homes and hospitals, where the five-day quarantine recommendation is still in place.
“We wanted to give people an easy and easy-to-understand way to protect themselves. People who are more vulnerable to these viruses were our top priority when putting together this guidance. We all know people who are vulnerable, and it’s in my own family. So that was a top priority for me,” Cohen said. “Hand hygiene, wearing a ventilation mask, getting tested, these are additional strategies he wants to use in the next five days after his fever goes down and his symptoms improve.”
Cohen also said the CDC has found ways to provide both simple guidance and protection for vulnerable populations.
“We know that if things are simple and people remember and use them, it actually reduces the spread of the virus overall,” Cohen said.
The new guidelines are consistent with what the CDC has recommended for influenza “for decades,” the agency said.
According to the CDC, there are 17,310 hospitalizations per week due to COVID-19, and the virus has been responsible for 2.1% of hospital deaths so far this year.
