Gov. Abbott Is Purposefully Trying to ‘Wreak Havoc in Other Cities and States Across the Country’

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas) was deliberately “trying to cause havoc in other cities and states across the country.” “There is,” he said.

Anchor Dana Bash said, “Listen to what Texas Governor Greg Abbott told me on the show about whether we need the law. Listen.”

“The problem is the fact that there is currently a law passed by the United States Congress that gives the executive branch the power to deny illegal immigration. The president doesn’t need new laws. We need a backbone to ensure that we say we will enforce our immigration laws.

“I couldn’t have been more wrong, I couldn’t have been more wrong,” Mayorkas said. In fact, former President Trump tried to close the border, but it was blocked by the courts and never saw the light of day. ”

He added, “This is coming from individuals who are intentionally refusing to coordinate, communicate, and cooperate with other officials and are attempting to wreak havoc in other cities and states across the country. It is a failure of governance. It’s not a model and he couldn’t be more wrong.”

Mayorkas continued, “In December 2023, we encountered historic numbers of people at our southern border. Mexico had seized control of enforcement operations, and enforcement agencies were losing funding. He then sent Secretary Blinken and me to meet with our Mexican counterparts and deliver that important message. Mexico did the same, and the numbers for January of this year. has decreased by more than 50%. So there is something we can do.”
