Calls for ‘Immediate’ (Temporary) ‘Ceasefire’ in Gaza

Vice President Kamala Harris made headlines on Sunday when she called for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza. However, she justified her request by saying the suspension would last “six weeks” and would also include hostage release arrangements with Hamas.

England daily mail Harris’s statement:break” and met with President Joe Biden, who rejected calls for a ceasefire. But he simply reiterated his position that a six-week ceasefire was needed as part of the deal.

of daily mail report Harris’ seemingly explosive statements in the article lacked important context.

Her comments in her speech in Selma: Alabamaon Sunday is the strongest condemnation [sic] Israeli actions since October 7th Hamas Attacks by Biden administration officials.

Citing ‘suffering on an incalculable scale’ in war-torn countries [sic]”We need an immediate ceasefire for at least the next six weeks,” he said.

“Now the hostages will be rescued and we will receive a large amount of aid. This will allow us to build something more permanent and ensure our safety.” Israel We must respect the Palestinian people’s right to dignity, freedom, and self-determination,” Harris said.

Harris’ remarks were not the “strongest condemnation” of Israel by a senior Biden official. That dubious honor belongs to Biden himself, who accused Israel of “indiscriminate bombing,” a statement the White House was forced to retract.

Moreover, Gaza is not a “state.” The area is inhabited by Palestinians and, at least until recently, ruled by a terrorist organization. The terrorist organization started the war on October 7th with completely baseless attacks on innocent people in Israel.

More importantly, Harris’ request simply reiterated Biden’s current proposal regarding Israel’s proposed hostage deal. accepted — In that case, the fighting would stop for six weeks. Hamas is likely to release some of the 134 Israeli hostages it still holds. Israel will release more Palestinian terrorist prisoners. And more aid will enter Gaza. The only difference is the word “immediate”, which downplays the need for negotiations to suspend fighting.

So while Harris’ statement may have impressed the audience and the media, it was primarily a rebuke rather than a “break” with the Democratic Party’s restive progressive base. This is simply a restatement of Biden’s own approach to the issue.
