Decision Desk headquarters predicts that Nikki Haley will win the Republican presidential primary in Washington, D.C., marking her first victory in the Republican nomination process.
According to DDHQ, Haley received 1,274 votes to former President Trump’s 676 votes, according to all precincts.
The former U.N. ambassador’s victory breaks Trump’s streak of six or more wins, starting the Republican nomination race. For Haley, it’s a much-needed win to show she can outdo Trump somewhere, but she still has a long road ahead of her.
She has vowed to remain in the race at least until this week’s Super Tuesday, when more than a dozen states vote. But she failed to win any early voting states in January and February, and there are no states where she clearly has a chance of winning.
Still, a victory in the winner-take-all D.C. primary would give him all 19 delegates. Voting in the district took place over three days, from Friday to Sunday.
Mr. Trump still holds an early lead in delegates and is likely to gain a significant lead on Tuesday as additional states vote. Mathematically, a candidate needs at least 1,215 delegates to clinch the Republican nomination.
The Democratic primary in Washington, D.C., will be held in June.
