In the wake of Laken Hope Riley’s brutal murder, Republican lawmakers introduced a bill that would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain undocumented immigrants charged with theft or robbery.

The suspect in this horrific murder is 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela. He is charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, interfering with a 911 call and concealing Riley’s death.
ICE confirmed that Ybarra entered the United States illegally in 2022 near El Paso, Texas. He was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection on September 8, 2022, after illegally crossing the U.S. southern border.
ICE said the Venezuelan was released by U.S. border officials pending review of his immigration case.
Ybarra was reportedly arrested by the New York City Police Department in August 2023 and charged with injury to a child under 17 and motor vehicle license violation.

Riley’s funeral was held Friday.
