Nevada Democrat makes Senate re-election bid official

Nevada Sen. Jacky Rosen announced Monday at her union hall in Las Vegas that she has formally filed for re-election in the presidential battleground state, a top Republican target in a tight 2024 Senate race.

The first-term moderate Democrat began campaigning for a second term last year, but 10 Republican challengers flocked to the campaign field to oppose her. Rosen has not identified any potential Democratic candidates.

Mr. Rosen, who was introduced by plumbers, plumbers, firefighters, electrical workers and leaders of a powerful local hotel union, told lawmakers he wanted to maintain Democratic control of the Senate and that “MAGA Republicans would “Their support will be key to preventing the bill from being debated.” ”

She also made the abortion debate a central part of her remarks. Nationally, Democrats are trying to focus voters’ attention on a June 2022 Supreme Court decision that would overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized the right to terminate a pregnancy.

“I will never back down when it comes to our reproductive rights at stake,” Rosen said.

Republican candidates for the Senate race include Sam Brown, a former Army captain who is running for the Senate in 2022 and has the backing of the party’s leadership in Washington, D.C.

His campaign manager, Faith Jones, linked Rosen to Biden in a statement criticizing unemployment, housing, food and grocery costs.

Other Republican challengers include Democrat Joe Biden in the 2022 race for Nevada Secretary of State after emerging as an outspoken denier of his victory over former President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. They include Jim Merchant, who ran unsuccessfully.

Aides to Merchant’s campaign did not respond to messages about Rosen’s announcement.

Mr. Trump lost Nevada to Mr. Biden in 2020 by more than 30,000 votes despite legal challenges from Republicans and campaign aides who claimed election fraud but presented no evidence.
