The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic subpoenaed former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on May 24 to testify about his COVID-19 nursing home policies.
“Governor Cuomo forced New York nursing homes to accept positive coronavirus patients. Americans died,” the committee said in a post on said.
Subcommittee Chairman Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) wrote in a letter to Mr. Cuomo on Tuesday:[t]The Select Subcommittee specifically sought your testimony because it was your administration that issued the Nursing Home Order of March 25, 2020, which stated in relevant part:[n]o Resident will be denied re-entry or entry to the facility. [nursing home] Based solely on confirmed or suspected[ed] Diagnosis of novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). ”
“This poor decision effectively forced thousands of COVID-19 positive patients into nursing homes, with predictable but deadly consequences for New York’s most vulnerable populations.” He continued. “Of course, even after you left office, you have maintained that the March 25 order was consistent with CMS and CDC guidance.Furthermore, it was the nursing home staff, not the government order, that was to blame. for those who died in nursing homes as a result.”
“In addition to the March 25 order itself, there is also troubling evidence suggesting that the Cuomo administration downplayed its impact at best and covered it up at worst,” he said.
