Democrats conspire new plan to block Trump from 2024 ballot, exposing their own antidemocratic double standard

House Democrats already have other plans to block Donald Trump from the 2024 vote.

Hours after the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Trump cannot be disqualified from voting in the presidential election, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) introduced a bill that would do just that. I promised.

“I’m working with many of my colleagues on reinstating the law that would require a process to determine that rioters are disqualified under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment,” Raskin said on CNN. We are working on it.”

2022 Mr. Raskin and Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Florida) introduced legislation that would create A mechanism that allows the Department of Justice to use Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to sue candidates and keep them off the ballot. The bill would expand the definition of “insurrection” to include anyone who was “physically present within the Capitol building on January 6, 2021 without authorization.” Although the bill was introduced when Democrats held the House majority, it was never considered in committee.

Monday, Ruskin confirmed that He was already working on amending the bill “in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling.” He told CNN he is working with Wasserman Schultz and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.).

There are several problems with Raskin’s campaign.

First, Congress has already outlawed rebellion itself (18 United States Code § 2383). The problem for Democrats is: There is no defendant on January 6th. Special Counsel Jack Smith also did not indict Donald Trump for violating this law. Indeed, Congress could expand the definition of “insurrection” to include January 6th. But that doesn’t erase the fact that Congress has already defined and outlawed insurrection, and neither Trump nor the January 6 defendants have been charged with violating Section 18. United States Code § 2383.

Second, Raskin’s efforts to block Trump from voting are “highly cynical.” According to law professor Jonathan Turley.Because Ruskin Participated in an effort to block Certification of Donald Trump’s 2016 victory.

Third, Republicans control the House, and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has already condemned Mr. Raskin’s plan. This means that any bills introduced by Democrats targeting President Trump will never be taken up in the House.

“Democrats need to understand that in this country, the American people, not the courts or Congress, will decide the next president,” a spokesperson for the speaker said. Said.

It is a virtue that Raskin has shown himself to be a champion of democracy, even though he is actually trying to prevent voters from having a voice at the ballot box on Election Day.
