Man finds library book due in 1962, but has nowhere to return it

A Vermont man found himself in an interesting situation. He found a very overdue library book and now has nowhere to return it.

Garry Dufour of North Rupert, Vermont, was recently sorting through his great-aunt Madeline’s old belongings when he made a surprising discovery: a library book that had been past its due date in 1962.

Sarah Teasdale’s book Love Songs has been anticipated for more than 60 years.

Dufour told Fox News Digital in a phone conversation that the book was checked out from the College of Saint Rose library.

Interestingly, his aunt’s name is not listed as a borrower, and she attended the College of Saint Rose for decades before the book was loaned.

It’s unclear how she came into possession of the book, but Dufour said it was “spooky”.

Dufour told Fox News Digital on Tuesday that she cleaned out her great-aunt’s home in Lake George, New York, where she passed away about 20 years ago.

At that time, he did not notice the long-awaited book.

He learned about the book after hearing the news that the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, would be closing at the end of the year.

Dufour remembered that his great-aunt had some early 20th century textbooks published by the College of Saint Rose, so he decided to look through them, he said.

Only then did he discover Love Songs and realize what a strange discovery the book was.

The school announced in December that it would close at the end of the school year in June 2024, leaving Dufour with nowhere to return books.

Jeffrey D. Stone, chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees, which voted to close the school on Thursday, said in a statement: “It is with deep regret that the Board of Trustees has decided to close the university at the end of this academic year.” Friday, December 1st.

“The Board has determined that the University does not have the financial resources to operate the entire 2024-2025 academic year and therefore cannot continue to be an independent educational institution.”

Stone continued, “We are shocked that despite all our efforts, we were unable to avoid closure. Our goal now is to ease the transition for our students, faculty and staff.”

With schools closing soon, Dufour told Fox News Digital she doesn’t know where her aunt’s books will go.

He said he contacted the College of Saint Rose library about the overdue book and learned the library would contact him soon.
