Contested Democratic primary in Alabama heads to runoff

Democrats Shomali Figures and Anthony Daniels are expected to face a runoff in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District, according to Decision Desk headquarters.

Figures, a former aide to Attorney General Merrick Garland who also worked on the Biden-Harris transition team, ran against Daniels, the state House minority leader, on April 16 after failing to win either candidate. We are planning to have a showdown. To avoid a run-off, candidates must receive at least half the votes.

A total of 11 candidates competed on the Democratic side.

The 2nd Congressional District was created as the state’s second majority black district after the Supreme Court ruled last year that the state could violate the Voting Rights Act. . Black residents make up 27 percent of the state’s population, but at the time he was the only majority-black district in the state.

Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan election handicapper, rates the state’s 2nd Congressional District as “likely to be Democratic.”
