Elon Musk slammed Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife Mackenzie Scott’s charitable donations in an X post that he deleted shortly after it was published online Wednesday night.
“‘The ex-wife of a super-rich man who hates his ex-spouse’ should be prosecuted as one of the reasons why Western civilization fell.” He said this on his social media platform (formerly Twitter). .
Musk was responding to an X user who complained that Scott, who divorced the Amazon founder in 2019 after 25 years of marriage, was donating to organizations that “address racial and gender issues.” I wrote this post.
“Her fund should be called the AWFL Fund. This is the ultimate expression of the wishes of America’s scariest group,” wrote an X user who goes by the name “i/o.”
Musk deleted the post several hours later. The Post has reached out to X owners Scott and Bezos for comment.
The root of Musk’s animosity toward Scott appears to be her charity work for political action committees aligned with the Democratic Party.
In May 2022, Musk wrote on social media that Scott was funding a “PAC masquerading as a charity.”
“I’m pretty sure Mackenzie said that.” [ahem] Scott isn’t a huge fan of her ex-husband. Unfortunately, many others are caught in the crossfire,” Musk wrote.
According to her website: Scott donated hundreds of millions of dollars to organizations dedicated to causes such as “racial equality,” “LGBTQ+ equality,” “gender equality,” public health, climate change, and “functional democracy.”
Among the recipients of her donations are the Obama Foundation, the Movement for Black Lives, the Jackie Robinson Foundation, Morehouse College, Howard University, Planned Parenthood, and the George W. Bush Presidential Center.
Scott’s net worth is Tracked by Bloomberg Billionaires Index $36 billion as of Wednesday. The 53-year-old author derives her wealth from a 1.9% ownership stake in her ex-husband’s e-commerce company.
Scott acquired a 4% stake in Amazon as part of his divorce from Bezos, according to SEC filings. At the time, her stake was worth $36 billion, making her one of the richest women in the world.
In late January, Bloomberg News reported that Scott sold 65.3 million Amazon shares, or about 25% of the company’s stock.
By the time she sold her stake, it was worth $10.4 billion.
Scott, who vowed to give half of his fortune to charity in 2019, has donated millions of dollars to various causes.
Since divorcing Bezos, Scott has donated more than $16.5 billion to charities.
Last year alone, she published a list of more than 360 organizations that received a total of $2.15 billion.
Scott has signed the Giving Pledge, a non-binding pledge in which billionaires commit to giving away a large portion of their wealth.
“In addition to the wealth I have accumulated in my life, I have a lot of money to share,” Scott he wrote in a letter on the Giving Pledge website.
“My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time, effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will continue until the coffers are empty.”
Musk has also donated some of his wealth to charity.
The Tesla mogul is the third-richest person in the world by net worth as of Wednesday. Bloomberg Billionaires Index For $189 billion, he gave $5.7 billion worth of Tesla stock to a charity he co-founded with his brother Kimbal Musk.
The Musk Foundation has donated tens of millions of dollars to a variety of causes, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and XPRIZE, an organization that awards cash prizes to aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs.
Scott married teacher Dan Jewett in March 2021, and their divorce was finalized in January 2023.
Last year, Bezos got engaged to his girlfriend of four years, Lauren Sanchez.
