Republican and Democratic lawmakers hope President Biden will address a variety of issues in his upcoming State of the Union address.
Ahead of Biden’s State of the Union address on Thursday, FOX News Digital asked members of Congress to share what they think the president should say in his highly anticipated address.
Republican lawmakers said Biden needs to talk about how to deal with the crisis and rising costs at the southern border, but Democrats believe the president should focus on winning his first term.
Several Republican senators told Fox News Digital that while they would like to hear Biden address issues at the southern border, they don’t actually expect him to talk about it.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told Fox News Digital that he expects Biden to “actually use that authority to protect our border,” but added, “I don’t think he’ll actually do that.” I don’t expect to be told that.”
Similarly, Rep. Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.) said that while Mr. Biden “needs to address his failures,” the content of the State of the Union address was “a reflection of what the speechwriters put into the speech.” It depends on the situation,” he said.
“He needs to deal with his failures, and I don’t know if he’ll do that,” Westerman said. “He shouldn’t be talking about borders or the rising costs of food and energy, which are the cause of his actions.”
Biden to deliver State of the Union address on record date
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) also wants to acknowledge the crisis at the southern border during his speech, but said, “If you say anything about the border, it’s going to be the Republican Party’s fault.” .

“I hope he’ll talk about the crisis at the border and that a lot of Americans are really suffering and what we’re going to do to help them. Maybe he’ll talk about that. And if he says something about the border, he’ll blame it on the Republicans,” Burchett told FOX. “I’d like to hear what he has to say. The truth is so terrible that I can’t imagine it being anything substantial.”
Democratic Rep. Seth Magaziner (DR.I.) told FOX he thinks Biden should talk about his accomplishments in his first term in Thursday’s speech.
“I think he needs to talk about the incredible accomplishments of his first term, including the infrastructure bill, negotiating with drug companies, lowering Medicare prescription drug prices, passing the Veterans Agreement Act, and how he’s going to build on that momentum. Will it continue? There will be a second period,” Magaziner said.
Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) also wants Biden to “keep talking about all the great work he’s done in terms of bringing manufacturing back to America,” while fellow Democrat Richard Sen. Blumenthal (D-Conn.) told FOX he wants to hear the president support the bipartisan Kids Online Safety Act.
