Trump Attacks Biden Using Xi’s Comments
On Thursday, President Donald Trump seized upon remarks made by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a summit in Beijing, using them to criticize former President Joe Biden.
Trump posted on Truth Social, stating, “When President Xi so elegantly mentioned that the United States is probably a nation in decline, he was referring to the tremendous damage we have suffered during the four years of Sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden administration, and he was 100% correct in that.” This came before the second day of discussions between the U.S. and China.
During the opening ceremony held on Wednesday night, Xi referenced the “Thucydides Trap,” posing the question of whether the U.S. and China can avoid the historical tendency for conflict between a rising power and an established one.
This comment illustrates Beijing’s perspective on the shifting global power dynamics. However, it remains ambiguous whether Xi specifically labeled the United States or the West as a declining entity.
Trump also claimed, “President Xi did not mention the incredible rise the United States has shown the world during the remarkable 16 months of the Trump administration, including an all-time high stock market and 401K, a military victory in Venezuela, and the military annihilation of Iran (continued!),” he added.
Continuing with his commentary, Trump insisted, “The United States is the hottest country in the world, and we hope our relationship with China will be stronger and better than ever!”
He went further to argue that under Biden, the U.S. has faced “immeasurable suffering,” affecting policies like open borders and higher taxes. Trump conceded that “two years ago” the nation was indeed “in decline.”
Officials from Fox News Digital reached out to both the White House and China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for comments. The White House press secretary referenced Trump’s Truth Social post, while a Chinese embassy spokesperson remarked that “the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand.”
However, there was no response from the Chinese embassy for additional details regarding Xi’s comments. Xi’s mention of the “Thucydides Trap” is rather linked to the risk of conflict when a rising power confronts an established one, especially in light of potential future tensions over Taiwan.
At a dinner welcoming Trump, Xi highlighted that this year marks the start of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development. He stated that over 1.4 billion Chinese citizens are focused on leveraging over 5,000 years of civilization to advance modernization through high-quality development.
In a statement, a spokesperson added that both nations can achieve mutual success, fostering peace and progress globally. Former President Biden shares a connection with Xi that dates back to their time as vice presidents.
However, the relationship between Biden and Xi has faced ongoing strategic challenges. The two leaders have scheduled meetings in Bali in 2022 and California in 2023 to address issues such as Taiwan, surveillance balloons, and fentanyl trafficking.
Biden’s representatives did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment by the time of publication. In his opening remarks after the welcoming ceremony in Beijing, Xi emphasized, “We should be partners, not rivals,” urging mutual success and prosperity between the major countries.
