Abbott says nothing Biden can say at SOTU will undo damage done by border policy

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said there was nothing President Biden could say in his upcoming State of the Union address Thursday to undo the damage done by his border policies.

“[T]In fact, when Biden became president, and now there are three laws already passed by Congress that give the president the power to deny illegal immigration, is Biden doing that? Instead, they are aiding and abetting. [and] It’s encouraging illegal immigration,” Abbott said in an interview with anchor Bret Baier on Fox News’ “Special Report.” “Second, to detain those who cross the border illegally, which he has not done. And third, to detain people who cross the border illegally, which he has not done. And third, to detain people who cross the border illegally, which he has not done. We call on the president to build a border wall, including a wall.”

“So what Joe Biden is doing is refusing to implement laws that have already been passed by Congress and actually acting against those laws,” Abbott continued. “Again, there are no words the president can articulate tonight that will overcome the fact that he unilaterally destroyed the United States of America.”

Biden’s handling of the southern border has been a point of contention among Republicans, who blame him for the current immigration crisis.

Biden and former President Trump just visited the southern border last week on a duel trip to the Lone Star State. Mr. Abbott joined Mr. Trump in Eagle Pass, and Mr. Biden visited Brownsville with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Mr. Mayorkas went after Mr. Abbott on Sunday for comments he made last week in which Mr. Biden said he did not need new laws to implement new border policies.

“I couldn’t have been more wrong. I couldn’t have been more wrong. And the fact is, former President Trump tried to close the border, but it was blocked by the courts and never saw the light of day,” Mayorkas told CNN. stated in the “State of the Union.”

“This is coming from an individual who is deliberately refusing to coordinate, communicate, and cooperate with other officials and who is trying to wreak havoc in other cities and states across the country. It is not a model of governance and , I couldn’t be more wrong,” he added.
