Man on remand calls police after being accidentally released from Sydney jail due to paperwork bungle | New South Wales

A man who was mistakenly released from a Sydney prison due to a paperwork error has called police to inform them of his whereabouts.

Corey Hastings was released from Long Bay Correctional Facility in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Thursday afternoon and was rearrested at a Bondi hotel on Friday morning.

The 30-year-old had been in custody and refused bail after appearing in court on Thursday morning, but was accidentally released.

Hastings’ documents incorrectly stated that he had been granted bail, so the NSW Department of Corrections allegedly released him from custody.

A police search and interrogation on Thursday night suggested Mr Hastings traveled by public transport and headed to a nearby shopping center after being released from prison.

According to ABC, the man learned about the raid in the media and called police on Friday morning. Mr. Hastings will not be charged in connection with his release.

He appeared via video link in Wagga Wagga District Court on Thursday morning on driving-related charges. Police announced Friday morning that preparations were underway to return him to prison.

A spokeswoman said the correctional service was “investigating how the mistake occurred”.
