Education Secretary Miguel Cardona has been designated as a 2024 survivor.

On Thursday, Cardona was taken to an undisclosed location away from the Capitol during President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address.

Designating survivors has been a tradition since 1981.

Each year, a government official is selected as the designated survivor. If a catastrophe occurs during the speech and the next official scheduled to hold the office of president fails to do so, the designated survivor becomes president.

Cardona is currently 15th in line for presidential succession. He first took office as Secretary of Education in March 2021.

There is no protocol as to who will be chosen as the designated survivor. Biden chose Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo in 2022 and Labor Secretary Marty Walsh in 2021.
