Letitia James booed in speech to NYC firefighters

New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) faced heavy boos and chants of “Trump” Thursday when she spoke at a promotion ceremony for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).

When James took the podium, some in the crowd clapped and others booed. The boos grew even louder, prompting James to address the issue before beginning his public remarks.

“Oh, come on, we are in the house of God,” James said to the jeers of the crowd.

“First,” James said, starting to speak. She paused, seemingly waiting for the boos to die down.

“Simmer it down. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for getting it out of my system.”

The boos continued for the first few minutes of James’ remarks praising the Rev. Pamela Holmes Saxton, who was sworn in as the FDNY’s first African-American female chaplain.

Minutes into the speech, the jeers reached a crescendo as some in the crowd showed apparent loyalty to the former president, who faced off against the New York attorney general in a massive civil fraud case against his business empire. started shouting “Trump”. .

Trump frequently attacked James in social media posts during the trial, but the trial found that Trump and executives conspired for years to alter James’ net worth to collect tax and insurance benefits. The case ended with a judge ordering Trump to pay more than $450 million.

Trump is appealing the decision, which bars him from holding any leadership role in any New York company for three years and orders independent officials to monitor his company. Mr. James said he was prepared to seize Mr. Trump’s assets if he did not pay the fine.

At the end of his speech Thursday, James asked the incoming pastor to pray for firefighters who “may be booing me.”

“Please pray for the firefighters who were with me as my mother was dying and who stayed in my house for an hour without knowing who I was and worked to rescue her. And I thank them.” Thank you to the members of the FDNY who treated her body and prayed for her as she passed away,” James said. “Some people may be here. Some people may boo. But I will still pray for them.”

The Hill has requested statements from James’ office and the FDNY.
