In Thursday’s State of the Union address, Biden said claimedWhen it comes to social security, “there are two paths forward.”
“Republicans can cut Social Security and give even more tax cuts to the wealthy,” Biden said, drawing boos from Republicans in both houses of Congress.
Mr. Biden falsely responded to the boos by saying, “That’s the proposal.” “What the heck? You don’t want another $2 trillion in tax cuts? I thought that was your plan. Well, that’s good to hear.”
This statement was met with protests calling it a liar. From the Republican side of the aisle.
Trump, who is likely to be Biden’s opponent in November and is beating Biden in national polls and polls in battleground states, told Breitbart News that he wants to be in the Oval Office in 2022. He vowed never to cut Social Security if he returned. In a December 2022 interview, Trump also accused establishment Republicans like former Speaker Paul Ryan of trying, as Trump said, to “destroy the country.”
“We have to protect it. It’s a contract with the people,” President Trump said of Social Security. “They go in. They work, and they do work. They put blood, sweat and tears into Social Security, and then Paul Ryan and others who want to destroy it… We have a contract. There’s a lot of places where we can take advantage of the waste. Look at the Green New Deal nonsense. This is many times more than Social Security they’re doing with the Green New Deal. That’s like throwing money out the window. I’m all about the environment. I’m an environmental activist in the truest sense of the word. But the Green New Deal is like the Green New Hoax. That’s a hoax. So when they talk about Social Security, are they going to destroy Social Security and build non-functioning windmills all over the place? That’s not going to happen to me.”
President Trump also called on Republicans in the 118th Congress to never touch Social Security or Medicare.
“Under no circumstances should Republicans vote to cut Medicare or Social Security by a penny to pay for Joe Biden’s reckless spending,” Trump said. “It’s more reckless than anyone has ever done or experienced.” Said.
It’s highly unlikely that Republicans will touch Social Security unless they want to run against a presumptive candidate who enjoys support like money in the Republican primary.
