By “it” Mr. Bennett means his highly practical and ethically questionable sales methods, in which struggling car dealerships desperately try to make a product that doesn’t work work. He pays $4,000 a day for it.
Landis’ film depicts Bennett going to the sexier side of Memphis. There, he dons a cheap tuxedo and, fueled by beer, cigarettes, and visits to a local strip club, holds court over a multi-day “slasher sale” where he engages customers with outrageous content. Discounts (one car sold for $88) and unpleasant stunts.
Along the way, he hilariously corroborates every stereotype you might have about used car salesmen, while probably inventing a few new ones.
