Speaker Johnson issues grim warning after 170 Democrats oppose Laken Riley Act: ‘There will be more victims’

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) warned that if “Democrats have their way,” many more innocent Americans could become victims of violent crimes at the hands of illegal immigrants. There is.

The House passed it before President Joe Biden delivered his State of the Union address Thursday night. Laken Riley method.of The final vote was 251-170.. All Republicans voted yes, joined by 37 Democrats.

The bill would require federal authorities to detain undocumented immigrants who are arrested or charged with “crimes of robbery, theft, theft, or shoplifting.” The bill gives states the power to sue the federal government if the federal government fails to comply with detention requirements. Importantly, the bill also denounces Biden’s “open border policies” and places the blame for Riley’s death at the president’s feet.

It is unclear whether such a law would have prevented Riley’s death; but The Venezuelan immigrant charged with her murder, Jose Ibarra, was arrested last year for shoplifting.

from atlanta journal constitution:

In October 2023, Ibarra, 26, and his brother Diego Jose Ibarra, 29, were cited on shoplifting charges and placed in a pre-arrest diversion program, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report. Informed. Local authorities allege approximately $200 worth of clothing and food was stolen from Walmart, records show. An arrest warrant was issued for Jose Antonio Ibarra on Dec. 20 after he failed to appear in court in the case, records show.

After the vote, Johnson said, “170 House Democrats just voted against the Laken Riley Act, which denies requests to detain and deport illegal immigrants caught committing crimes.”

Mr Johnson also warned: “Sadly, if Democrats have their way, there will be many more victims like Laken Riley.”

It is not yet clear whether the Laken-Riley Act will become law. Democrats have a majority in the Senate, so it would of course require Biden’s signature.

But Democrats are unlikely to refuse to pass a clearly bipartisan bill. And while it would not be politically expedient for Biden to veto the bill, the White House will likely take issue with the bill’s language blaming Biden’s policies for Riley’s death. .
