Baton Rouge, Louisiana (WVLA/WGMB) — ALDI has entered into a deal to acquire Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie Supermarkets and Harvey Supermarkets, according to an announcement Thursday.
The acquisition is part of a $9 billion expansion plan to open 800 stores nationwide by the end of 2028, ALDI officials said. The five-year plan includes opening new stores and renovating stores.
“Our growth is driven by our customers, who are demanding more ALDI stores in their neighborhoods across the country,” said CEO Jason Hart.
Harveys and Winn-Dixie are two grocery chains serving the South. He has more than 500 stores in Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida and Alabama. The acquisition will facilitate ALDI’s expansion in the southeastern states, the company said.
The company also said it plans to add about 330 stores in the Northeast and Midwest by the end of 2028 and grow in the West by opening stores in Southern California, Phoenix and Las Vegas.
ALDI says the store conversion process is expected to begin in mid-summer. The majority of these stores will reopen as ALDI stores next year.
The grocery company said a “significant portion” of existing Winn-Dixie and Harvey Supermarkets will continue to operate under their current banner.
“For more than a decade, ALDI has added hundreds of stores annually across the country,” Hart said. “This success would not have been possible without our dedicated team members and supplier partners who deliver value and convenience to our customers every day. There will be opportunities.”
