Although the Manasquan School District has decided to take legal action over a serious officiating error, members of the high school boys basketball team displayed great sportsmanship Saturday.
Jersey Shore High School thought it had earned a berth to the Group 2 state championship after scoring a buzzer-beater against Camden earlier this week. However, officials later came together and reversed the decision, giving Camden a 46-45 victory.
However, many videos showed that the basket should be counted. The New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association acknowledged the “error” but said it could not reverse the decision.

Manasquan qualified for the state finals but did not compete.
Manasquan’s lawsuit sought to postpone the championship game, but the game was played Saturday afternoon at Rutgers University, and Camden won its second championship in three years.
Although Manasquan players weren’t on the court, they traveled north to the Rutgers campus to watch the game, and when Camden won the title, Suquan players gave Camden a standing ovation.
It’s worth noting that the Manasquan girls team was probably there to show school spirit, as they are scheduled to play the state finals at Rutgers on Saturday afternoon. However, considering they should have been on the court instead of in the stands, there’s no denying that they displayed sportsmanship when they didn’t have to.
Manasquan’s class act comes amid backlash Camden’s athletic director has received over the past 24 hours.

A post was posted Friday night from the X account, which is believed to belong to Camden athletic director Will Hickson. He said “See you at Rutgers” with a heart emoji and a 1989 movie poster for Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing.”
Some commenters saw the post as an act of vandalism, given the lengths Manasquan went to to reverse the decision he made Tuesday night.
