Giants put J.D. Davis on waivers amid Matt Chapman signing

J.D. Davis’ tenure in San Francisco could be coming to an end soon.

The Giants placed the third baseman on waivers on Saturday. Confirmed by Jon Heyman of the Post..

Last week, the Giants acquired third baseman Matt Chapman to a three-year, $54 million contract, putting Davis’ spot on the roster in jeopardy.

Heyman reported that the Giants had a hard time finding trade candidates for Davis, who seemed to run out of spots in the starting lineup after adding Chapman and slugger Jorge Soler.

Davis, a former Mets infielder, told reporters he didn’t know about Chapman’s contract ahead of time and didn’t find out until he finished watching “Dune: Part 2.”

The next day, the 30-year-old said he didn’t know what San Francisco meant to him.

“I don’t know what the game plan is.” According to the San Francisco Chronicle. “And I don’t want to put my foot in my mouth.”

Davis spent four years in New York, posting an .815 OPS, but struggled (.238/.324/.359 slash line in 66 games) before being traded to San Francisco as part of a four-player package in 2022. Darling Ruff.

He immediately flourished with the Giants, hitting eight home runs and totaling 16 extra-base hits in the final 49 games of 2022.

When he returned to Citi Field last year, Davis cited mass turnover in the front office and managerial position as the reason things didn’t go as planned in New York.

“It wasn’t just me in the clubhouse, there were a lot of people who felt like they were in survival mode with so many moving parts and so much uncertainty,” Davis said.

In his first full season with the Giants last year, he was more down to earth, posting a 103 OPS+ that was just above league average.

Heyman added that the Blue Jays, the team Chapman left, could make sense for Davis.
