Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said intelligence agencies should “silence” former President Donald Trump from interviewing him because of concerns about whether he would be able to share information.
In an interview Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Schiff criticized Trump over criminal charges and other lawsuits alleging he mishandled classified information.
“Never before has a presidential candidate committed such gross lapses in the handling of classified information,” Schiff said. “So I have to hope, knowing the intelligence community very well, that they streamline the briefing for Donald Trump.”
“That means they won’t give him any information other than what’s absolutely necessary. There’s nothing to reveal the source or the method,” he continued. “Because I can’t trust him to do the right thing with that information. He was so reckless.”
Trump’s federal criminal case in Florida alleges that he took a box of classified documents from the White House to his South Florida home and misled federal agents who came looking for it.
Schiff, who is running for the California Senate and is a key figure in the former president’s impeachment, said giving Trump access to information was a concern.
“It’s part of a long tradition,” he said. Intelligence agencies “will and should be careful about what they share with him.”
