A fire broke out in Los Angeles over the weekend, wreaking havoc on an illegal marijuana business, sending massive smoke billows across the city from burning sulfuric acid and sending five firefighters to the hospital.
A two-story industrial building in the Central Industrial District went up in flames on Saturday morning. This was announced by the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Firefighters forced their way into the 69-year-old building downtown around 8 a.m. Then, five of the firefighters were enveloped in sulfuric acid due to a sudden change in wind direction.
The dangerous substance caused them to “experience a burning sensation on their faces and extremities, and in at least one case, respiratory irritation,” the agency said.
The injured firefighters were taken to a local hospital for treatment and have since been released.
Officials said about 145 firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in less than an hour.
Witnesses said there were people in the building at the time of the fire, so two cadaver-sniffing dogs were brought in, but the specially trained dogs were unable to find any human remains.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
