A prominent Republican politician in Alabama has been charged with the “sexual torture” and murder of a male acquaintance.
Kyle Hayden Rueter, 36, killed Derek Franklin Walls, 54, of Harvest, Alabama, last week during a “physical altercation,” according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. It is said that
Authorities have released few details about the case, but say the sexual torture charges are related to charges of sexual abuse using inanimate objects.
It’s an eyebrow-raising twist to a saga that has captivated state politics.
Rueter previously served as campaign chairman for Alabama Sen. Tom Butler and was vice chair of the Young Republicans of Madison County. According to WHNT-TV.
Walls was found dead last Thursday at a home at 1790 Capshaw Road, about 20 minutes west of Huntsville in the northern part of the state.
Local television stations reported that Walls had been shot in the head, but the sheriff’s office denied that report in a social media post.
Police said, “The victim and the assailant were known to each other, and an argument ensued, resulting in injuries to the victim.”
“It appears that he died as a result of his injuries. Detectives are awaiting autopsy results, but have once again confirmed that the victim was not shot.”
Mr. Rueter was already being held without bail on a murder charge when he was charged with sexual torture.
Meanwhile, Walls’ daughter Shelby Thorson has started an online fundraiser to help pay for his funeral.
“My father’s life was taken at midnight on March 6th,” she wrote. “Due to this unexpected passing, there was no way to assist with her funeral expenses.”
“I would like to have a small service where everyone can come together in memory of my father,” she continued. “If anyone wants to donate to help fix things, that’s great.”
As of Sunday morning, more than $2,300 had been raised.
State Sen. Butler said in a statement Friday that he was “speechless” and “heartbroken for the families of everyone involved.” According to WAFF48.
